Skripsi Review :  A Semantic Analysis on Avril Lavigne Songs



In this research, the researcher chooses literary works like songs. Song is any poem even there is an attention of it being set to music. In this research, the researcher chooses the literary problem about song. It was “Avril Lavigne” Song. In this research, the researcher focuses and analyzes on five lyrics of “Avril Lavigne” songs in different album. The titles of the song are When you are gone”, “Wish You Were Here”, “Keep Holding On”, “My Happy Ending”, and “Everything Back but You”. In this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative approach. This research was descriptive qualitative because it depends very much on narrative descriptive. Qualitative approach took because this research was in discussing.The study was limited on lexical meanings and contextual meanings.The researcher chosen “Avril” song because her song is very interesting to examine and researched in more detail. Beside that, the researcher have a some reason to be analysis this research. This song give a lexical meaning and contextual meaning and than gave a massage for someone who loves their partner until the end of life.

Novel Synopsis

The Title : Mockingjay
Author : Suzanne Collins

Summary :

After Quarter Quell, Katniss move to District 13 (district that strunggle after bombing and life undergroud) because District 12 be broken up by Capitol. Gale, Prim and her Mother still alive. Peeta wants the Capitol to believe that Katniss played no part in the rebels. Katniss and Gale make a propo and mockingjay uniform drawn by Cinna. Plutarch send Katniss to hunting district in district fence. Beetee present Gale and Katniss a bow after dinner. Before go to District 8, Katniss washed her make up and also she feel like before. When Katniss visit the hospital, President Snow give bombing the hospital. On the broadcast Peeta menacing Katniss, he use the weapon to destroy all rebel. Gale and Katniss talk about past when they kiss in Victor Village and then Gale hit from keeper. District 13 bombing, Katniss and Prim going to underground to save their life (bunker). Plutarch send rescue for Peeta and Annie because Katniss afraid Peeta’s condition. Finnick tell Snow secret like Snow poison cup as antidote and Peeta safe from Capitol but Peeta hate Katniss. Peeta’s manipulated by Capitol to kill Katniss. The villages controlled by rebels and Nut remain impenetrable. Rebel plan bomb Nut and take survivor as captive. Cause Katniss rehabilitation her injury so rebels arrange a new group and strategy. Johanna tells Katniss about Peeta torture by Delly. Plutarch make Unit 451 and simulating all soldier and Coin entered Peeta to the Unit 451 (Star Squad). Jackson angling memory Peeta with a game called Real or Not real. Boggs dead and the unit choose Katniss as the leader. Snow broadcast the Mockingjay is death but Coin challenge her if he can not found the Mockingjay corpse. The squad fight with Mutt, they used nightlock to destroy Mutt. The Squad find Tigris in Capitol, She have cellar used to squad sleep. The Squad go to City Circle, a place Snow live and want kill him. Coin lead Panem and Snow as prisoner, Katniss prepare to kill Snow. Katniss does not release arrow to Snow, she release to Coin. Katniss depression because she is not kill Snow by own but Peeta help her to survive and they are married have a daughter and a son.

This research about word formation used in twilight novel by Stephenie Meyer and twilight movie script written by Melissa Rosenberg. This research studies about one of language development, word formation, both in spoken and written language. Language always develops along with the users. So, there are many new words that they created in their daily communication - mostly in spoken language. Word formation can create new words and also can enrich the vocabulary of the language that people used. This research was a kind of descriptive research because it described data and characteristics about the population or phenomenon being studied. In this research, the most frequently used of type of word formation in the movie was clitic, meanwhile in the previous study stated that acronym was the most frequently used of type of word formation. In this study, the uses of clitic words were to make the effectiveness during the conversation.

This research studied about one language development, word formation. The researcher is interested to conduct the research about the word formation process of slang in the movie script of two teenager movies, Camp Rock and Juno. These were the western teenager movies in 2008 and 2007, has a lot of fans, especially teenagers, because its context is about teenage daily life dealing with school friends and love. The movies it self is a kind of reflection of real life. Therefore, it gave the portrait about the language used by young people in that time in western. These reasons have made Camp Rock and Juno as the teenager movies becomes famous among teenagers. In this movie script, the characters mostly use the casual speech form, in which slangs areal so included in the conversations.It gave a reflection of phenomena about the use of language in the society.

This research studied about slang in “Bad Boys” movie script. The researcher interested to identification types of slang used by the characters, observe the functions of each slang type used by the characters, and analyze meaning of slang used in the movie script. The method and technique used in collecting data is documentation method and note taking technique. The data in this study were analyzed qualitatively. In addition The researcher found three different functions in clipping type, they are to address, to initiate relax conversation, and to express impresion. The meaning of American slang used by the character in “Bad Boys” movie script mostly consists of drugs, crimes and violence issues, because this movie is about drug dealers, criminal and drug users in the Miami.

The researcher exploring deeply, how passive constuctions are mostly translated from English (SL) into Bahasa Indonesia (TL). In the novel to find equivalent constructions the researcher used qualitatived analysis. The data analysis divided in four step, that is :
a)      Identifying the Passive Voice in English to investigate
b)      Identifying the Passive Voice in bahasa Indonesia to compare.
c)      Classifying the data into the form of Passive Voice both of SL and TL
d)     Contextualizing the change of passive voice into active voices when they were translated into bahasa Indonesia.
The researcher concluded some Passive Voice construction in SL are retained as passives one in TL and some Passive Voice in SL are chaged into active voice in bahasa indonesia.

The researcher chose SUPERNOVA: Ksatria, Putri dan Bintang jatuh” novel by Dewi Lestari as the object. The study was aimed to investigate the code switching produced by the characters. This study used descriptive qualitative approach because the researcher just wanted to know and describe codeswitching produced. The result and analysis of the study showed the details of code-switching used. There were 3 types and 6 functions of code switching from the total 21 switches which were pronounced by the characters. The three types were inter-sentential, metaphorical and tag switching. The result showed that the most dominant type was inter-sentential switching.

3. Iranian EFL learners’ sociolinguistic competence: Refusal strategies in focus

The researcher investigated the extent to which Iranian learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) learners are sociolinguistically competent in performing the speech act of refusal. The data were elicited form a sample of 30 Iranian EFL learners, 15 males and 15 females, who responded to situations in a discourse completion task (DCT). The results indicated that the three most frequent refusal strategies are ‘excuse, reason, explanation’, ‘nonperformative statement’ and ‘statement of regret’. The findings revealed the participants’ tendency toward positive and negative politeness in refusing. Regarding gender, Chi-square analyses revealed no significant differences between males and females in the use of both politeness strategies and refusal strategies. The refusal utterances were also rated by two native English speakers on a three-point politeness Likert scale (1: Polite, 2: Partially polite and 3: Impolite). The analysis of the content of the refusal semantic formulas included elements of both politeness and impoliteness.

It is here that the role of innovative teachers becomes quite essential. An effective teacher, despite having limited resources, can prove himself as a tool. The present paper examines various resources and tools that can prove beneficial in teaching English as a foreign language. It will also throw light on the advantages and disadvantages of using teaching aids and will discover ways of how our pedagogical styles may work wonders at times. It has to be realized that despite all cacophony, it is ultimately the man who has to master the machines. Teaching is not only about the introduction of innovative technology but is also the desire to be created amongst our students.

This article endeavors to elaborate written language production done by university students by using English subtitled videos. Two intact groups were assigned to accomplish two different tasks; that is, one group watched the video with subtitle and the other one without subtitle. The result of the study reveals that learners who carry out the tasks of watching video with subtitle improve their ability in written production in terms of fluency and accuracy regardless to complexity.

The researcher got research at English Department of FKIP of Muhammadiyah University of Malang especially Second Semesters that had a problem to comprehend English Text. The data collected from the reading test were analyzed to find the answer of problem. The steps in process were as follows: firstly, the writer corrected the student’s answer sheets; secondly, give score for each answer sheet, thirdly, identified the student’s score. This study uses descriptive method by collecting data in order to answer the question concerning status of subject of study. The subjectis second semesters that consist of 200 of students. The result of the analyzing of available can be interpreted that the students of English Department have mastered the English texts, and many students get problem namely 32 the students getting high score, 8 students getting lower score and the mean of value reliability items are 12,425. It means that the student’s ability in comprehending texts is good.
